Background
Malpensa and Linate are among the busiest airports in Italy in terms of passenger traffic (in 2024: a total of almost 40 million people per year, with an annual increase of more than 10%) and freight (in 2023: over 670,000 tonnes in total).
Both are undergoing modification, upgrading and expansion projects, often carried out simultaneously.
The work was carried out in accordance with the guidelines set by the municipal administration and the technicians of the various bodies involved.
Challenges
- Interventions of varying scale, type and complexity
From the installation of new technological systems (electrical substations, cooling plants, etc.) to the upgrading of networks and terminals serving public and commercial spaces. - Service continuity
All work is coordinated with SEA technicians to avoid interruptions to operations and minimise disruption to passengers and airport staff. - Safety
CEFLA staff are required to comply with air transport safety procedures, especially when working in areas outside customs controls.
Project Tasks
- 2011, Malpensa: construction of mechanical systems for the completion of the new passenger terminal in Terminal 1
- (known as the ‘Third/Third and Third Satellite’);
- 2014, Malpensa: upgrading of the technology centre and construction of refrigeration networks for the new
- passenger terminal and cargo area;
- 2017, Linate and Malpensa: award of contract for executive design and extraordinary maintenance
- work;
- 2022, Linate and Malpensa: framework agreement for executive design and extraordinary maintenance work;
- 2024, Linate: expansion of the passenger terminal to incorporate the adjacent Hangar 1 (for SEA Prime);
- 2024, Linate and Malpensa: multi-operator framework agreements for the executive design and implementation of extraordinary maintenance
- (civil and general aviation infrastructure), using materials and techniques with reduced environmental impact;
- 2025, Linate and Malpensa: framework agreement for the upgrading of the electricity distribution networks.
Implementation
Most of the work consists of the new installation or extraordinary maintenance of electrical and special systems for power supply, lighting, communications, security (access control, surveillance, public address, fire detection, etc.) and integrated management of the building-systems system.
CEFLA also deals with mechanical systems, with the exception of water and sanitation.
The close collaboration between the CEFLA team and SEA's technical staff facilitates the search for the most effective and convenient solutions (also with a view to energy and environmental sustainability), the planning of interventions and the management of different construction sites (often open simultaneously in locations far apart from each other).
