Background

FICO Eataly World was a theme park dedicated to the agri-food sector and gastronomy, located in the Bologna Agri-Food Centre. Opened on 15 November 2017, the park covered an area of approximately 100,000 m² and included shops, restaurants, educational areas and outdoor spaces dedicated to agricultural activities.

The project implied a significant challenge in terms of the design and construction of the technological systems, given the complexity and variety of available functions within the park.

Challenges

  • Integration with the existing architecture
Designing technological systems that integrate perfectly with the architecture of the complex, preserving the aesthetics and functionality of the spaces.
  • High energy efficiency standards
Ensuring plant solutions that meet the highest standards of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
  • Tight deadlines
Completing the work in a short time, coordinating with other construction site activities.

Project Tasks

Cefla oversaw the design and construction of the technological systems for FICO Eataly World, providing a turnkey solution that included:

  • Mechanical air conditioning, plumbing and industrial water systems.
  • Electrical systems for power and lighting.
  • Special systems, including security, fire prevention and building automation systems.

Implementation

The project was successfully completed in 2017, on schedule and within budget. The systems installed by Cefla have helped to ensure high standards of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability for FICO Eataly World.
In terms of electrical systems, it is worth noting the exclusive use of LED lighting and, above all, the production of electricity from the photovoltaic system (the largest on a roof in Europe), originally serving the operators now transferred to the NAM (Nuova Area Mercatale) and equipped with around forty delivery points (minimum 100 kW).
The rooms equipped with hoods have been fitted with systems for air extraction and recirculation or for air extraction only. The first type is used not only in closed laboratories but also in some shops and restaurants opening out to the mall. In addition to the hoods, there is an air extraction and replenishment system consisting of an extraction box with an inverter and a filtered and treated air replenishment unit. The air intake rate is equal to 80% of the extraction rate, so that the preparation rooms are at a lower pressure than the surrounding rooms. The air distribution and diffusion ducts are made of galvanised sheet metal. Replenishment is via adjustable finned supply grilles located near the hood. The air extraction systems are dedicated to the bars and small restaurants located in the mall and have modest extraction flow rates, counterbalanced by exhaust boxes with inverters.
Cefla has also been entrusted with the maintenance of the structure, which is carried out by qualified personnel on site using sophisticated real-time monitoring technologies.
